Gillis Peeters

Gillis Peeters (active 1622-1633) was a foundational Flemish painter, draughtsman, and engraver whose brief but impactful career was crucial to the refinement of two specialized genres: marine art and topographical landscape painting in the Southern Netherlands. Working primarily from Antwerp, Peeters helped transition 17th-century visual culture away from the large-scale history painting toward a dedicated focus on the environment and localized observation, setting a technical precedent for subsequent generations of landscape artists.

Peeters’s extant oeuvre, housed significantly in collections like the Rijksmuseum, demonstrates a high degree of technical skill across both printed and painted media. His work often focused on highly atmospheric and energetic subjects. A notable series of prints captures the drama of the chase, including the Wilde zwijnenjacht (Wild Boar Hunt), the Hertenjacht (Stag Hunt), and the powerful Berenjacht (Bear Hunt), revealing his mastery in conveying texture, movement, and the complex interaction of light and shadow within dense natural settings.

Yet, his capabilities extended far beyond the dramatic. The painting Watermill by a Wooded Outcrop and the print Boerderij aan een landweg illustrate his sensitive approach to pastoral realism, portraying the functional integration of architecture within the rural Flemish environment. It is perhaps the most captivating subtlety of his output that an artist so adept at depicting the violent kinetics of the hunt could render the serene, utilitarian charm of a farmstead with equal dedication and precision.

Peeters’s contributions to engraving were particularly significant, allowing his distinctive style to be widely distributed, thereby influencing the graphic medium across Flanders and beyond. Because many of his original works and related Gillis Peeters prints have entered the public domain, scholars today enjoy expanded access to his technique. This availability of high-quality prints and downloadable artwork ensures that Peeters’s precise, detailed contributions to landscape realism remain recognized and studied as integral to the development of Netherlandish art.
