Gérard Jean Baptiste Scotin

Gérard Jean Baptiste Scotin was active as a printmaker and engraver spanning the years 1681 through 1745. His extensive period of activity is documented through various public and private collections, establishing his presence in the European graphic arts landscape of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.

Scotin’s output, as represented in museum holdings, consists exclusively of prints. Six of his prints are documented in major international institutions, establishing the historical and museum-quality status of his work. These institutions include the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Notable works preserved in these collections include Parklandschap met elegant gezelschap and A country woman sitting in landscape with two boys at her side. Scotin is also recognized for his contributions to well-known satirical series, with plates such as Marriage A-la-Mode, Plate I and Marriage A-la-Mode, Plate VI held in museum archives.

Due to the period of their creation, many Gérard Jean Baptiste Scotin prints are now part of the public domain. This ensures accessibility for research and educational use, enabling institutions to offer high-quality prints and downloadable artwork derived from these original copper plates.
