George Townley Stubbs
George Townley Stubbs was an artist active during the late eighteenth century, with documented print production spanning the years 1776 through 1795. His known body of work, consisting of etchings and engravings, reveals a versatile approach to subject matter, encompassing both detailed animal studies, portraiture, and complex genre scenes.
The subjects represented in extant George Townley Stubbs prints range from naturalistic depiction, such as The Lyon (Recumbent Lion by a Pool), to formal portraiture, exemplified by Portrait of Warren Hastings, Esq. He also executed narrative and perhaps satirical works focusing on contemporary human interaction, including titles like The Summer Shower, or Mademoiselle Par, a Pluye and Out of Fits, or the Recovery to the Satisfaction of All Parties.
Five of the artist’s known prints are preserved and represented in major collections, establishing his presence in historical reference materials. Notably, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds examples of his work, confirming the museum-quality standard of his output. Today, much of the printed graphic work created during this period is in the public domain, providing access to high-quality prints for scholars and researchers.
