George Edwards
George Edwards was an artist and illustrator active from 1694 to 1762. His documented works focus primarily on detailed natural history subjects, particularly avian studies.
Edwards’s output is represented in significant international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. These institutions preserve a critical selection of his work, represented by 11 prints, two original drawings, and one published book.
The preserved George Edwards prints frequently demonstrate highly detailed illustrations of ornithology. Noteworthy titles represented in these museum collections include Black and White Water-Fowl with Blue Throat, Brown Bird with a Butterfly, and Brown Speckled Bird. Other cataloged works include Green Bird with Red Throat and Brown and Orange Bird and Red and Black Bird.
Today, many of these museum-quality illustrations are preserved digitally, ensuring wide access to works now within the public domain.
