George Bankart
George Bankart was a photographer active during the latter half of the nineteenth century, with documented production spanning the period from 1860 to 1888. His known body of work consists primarily of landscape and architectural studies, capturing specific locations in the English countryside.
Eleven photographs by Bankart are preserved in major American museum collections, affirming the historical and artistic value, and museum-quality, of his early prints. These works are represented in the holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art.
Bankart’s subject matter often focused on identifiable landmarks and picturesque topography, as seen in the documented studies Cottage at Wilford, Entrance to Dove Dale, Derbyshire, and On the "Sow" near Walton's House at Shallowford. Two other key images related to the writer Izaak Walton include In Dove Dale and Izaak Walton's House at Shallowford, Staffordshire. The works of George Bankart prints, created during this early era of photography, are increasingly relevant today as digitized nineteenth-century downloadable artwork enters the public domain.
