Gasparo Morone
Gasparo Morone was a metalworker active for the better part of the seventeenth century, spanning the years 1600 through 1685. His specialization lay in the production of metalworks, a medium frequently associated with commemorative medals and detailed portrait reliefs during the Baroque era.
Morone’s documented output focuses intently on high-profile ecclesiastical portraiture. Seven of his metalworks are represented in museum collections, all of which depict the mid-seventeenth-century pontiff. His key subject matter includes multiple variations of Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi), who reigned from 1655 to 1667. Other works documented in institutional holdings carry the titles Alexander VII (Pope, 1655–67) and simply Pope Alexander VII. These pieces confirm Morone's importance in the field of medallic art. His works are preserved in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Today, the detailed relief images created by Morone are often available as high-quality prints, particularly those works residing in the public domain.
