G. B. Gething

G. B. Gething was a photographer whose documented artistic career spanned the mid-19th century, active from approximately 1845 to 1856. Working in the early years of the medium, Gething focused predominantly on topographical landscape studies and views of specific natural and industrial sites.

Gething's extant portfolio, which includes five photographs represented in major American collections, features works that capture both the dramatic natural environment and architectural elements. Notable documented pieces include the industrial landscape Donemark Mill near Bantry and the landscape study River Scene. Further works demonstrate an interest in the Welsh terrain, represented by the scenic views River Bank in the Vale of Neath, Vale of Neath, and the natural feature study The Lower Fall.

The significance of Gething’s early photographic output is established by its institutional representation. Works by the artist are preserved in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Through these efforts, certain G. B. Gething prints are now part of the public domain, allowing for the availability of high-quality prints and downloadable artwork for study and appreciation.
