Floris Balthasarsz. van Berckenrode
Floris Balthasarsz. van Berckenrode was a printmaker active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, with his documented creative period spanning the years 1596 to 1612. The artist’s output includes both detailed cartography and figural or ornamental compositions.
Van Berckenrode’s work is represented in museum collections by six surviving prints. These include a series of detailed map sheets, such as the sections designated Kaart van Delfland (blad midden boven), Kaart van Delfland (blad midden onder), Kaart van Delfland (blad midden rechts), and Kaart van Delfland (blad rechtsboven). The documented prints also encompass decorative designs, exemplified by the plate Horizontal Panel with Two Medallions Containing Cupid.
The importance of Van Berckenrode’s graphic production is underscored by the institutional collections that preserve his works. Representative high-quality prints are held by major international institutions, specifically the Rijksmuseum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since much of this historic work resides in the public domain, the art is often accessible today as downloadable artwork used for reference and historical study.
