Florence Stevenson
Florence Stevenson was an artist active between 1935 and 1936 whose documented output contributed significantly to the Index of American Design. This federal arts project focused on creating precise visual records of American decorative and folk art objects from the colonial period through the nineteenth century.
Stevenson’s specialization involved creating detailed, technical renderings of utilitarian and historical objects. A total of 15 works attributed to Stevenson are represented in major museum collections, establishing their participation in this important government documentation effort. These works are characterized by their accuracy and focus on material culture.
Specific documented renderings include Candle Snuffer and Candle Socket, alongside documentation of historical metalwork such as Pa. German Coffee Pot, Silver Fiddle Head Spoon, and Silver Spoon. Examples of Florence Stevenson prints and original catalog drawings are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art. Because of their origin in federal projects, much of this material is now in the public domain, allowing for widespread access to downloadable artwork for researchers and historians.
