Dirk Vis Blokhuyzen

Dirk Vis Blokhuyzen was a draftsman and printmaker active in the early 19th century, with his documented artistic activity centered around 1809. Known primarily for his landscape and topographical etchings, Blokhuyzen produced detailed views of both Dutch and international scenery.

The artist’s surviving body of work, represented by five documented Dirk Vis Blokhuyzen prints held in the Rijksmuseum collection, demonstrates a clear focus on specific geographic locations and detailed architectural elements. Dutch subjects include Gezicht in het Haagse Bos and two distinct views of the coastal town, Duinlandschap en gezicht op huizen en kerk van Scheveningen and Duinlandschap met kerken en ruiter bij Scheveningen. Blokhuyzen also depicted foreign locales, evidenced by Gezicht in de Hooglanden te Schotland and Landschap met boerderij en molen te Holstein.

These landscape studies offer insight into early 19th-century European views. As historically significant works, they are often digitized and distributed as high-quality prints, contributing to collections made available in the public domain.
