Daniel Sudermann

Daniel Sudermann was an artist and possible illustrator known to have been active around 1624. Although precise biographical details are limited, his output suggests involvement in topographical study, historical documentation, and publishing during the 17th century.

Thirteen books and one print are represented in museum collections. The subjects documented include German cityscapes, suggesting Sudermann specialized in engraving or illustration work. Notable topographical views include Gezicht op Fulda, Gezicht op Koblenz, and Gezicht op Neurenberg met poppenspelers. Sudermann’s documented work also includes narrative subjects, such as Diner bij de Rooms-Duitse keizer and the detailed scene Geketende tijger met toeschouwers en kasteel in de achtergrond. Today, Daniel Sudermann prints are sought after for their historical detail.

The majority of documented works are held in the Rijksmuseum collection. Because historical documentation and illustrative material from this era are often in the public domain, Sudermann’s images are frequently available as downloadable artwork. This preservation ensures that these museum-quality prints remain accessible to researchers interested in early 17th-century European views.
