Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki
Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was an artist active during the mid-eighteenth century, producing work spanning the period of 1700 through 1758. The surviving examples of his output, as preserved in major public collections, demonstrate expertise across drawing, printmaking, and painting.
The graphic arts form the core of his documented production, with seven drawings and seven Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki prints held in museum repositories. At least one painting is also represented in institutional holdings. His works depict subjects ranging from formal portraits to genre scenes and preparatory studies, including Portrait of a Lady Sewing and the atmospheric composition Lovers in a Thunderstorm. Other notable works include the intimate Portrait of the Artist's Wife and the complex sheet Three Children (recto); Sketches of Head, Eyes, Lips, and Flowers (verso).
The continued preservation of Chodowiecki’s work is secured in international institutions such as the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Rijksmuseum. Many of these significant historical works are now in the public domain, allowing for the creation of high-quality prints. Figural studies, such as Two Standing Ladies (Demoiselles Quantin), continue to serve as essential reference points for the study of eighteenth-century artistic practice.
