Charles Volkmar
Charles Volkmar was an artist whose active period spanned the late 19th century, operating professionally between 1870 and 1897. His verifiable artistic legacy is preserved primarily through his graphic works and decorative arts held in significant institutional collections.
Volkmar’s work is represented in major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) and the National Gallery of Art (NGA). Holdings in these institutions include four landscape prints focusing on pastoral scenes, such as Landscape with Hay Wagon, Landscape with Horses Drinking, Landscape with Sheep, and Landscape with Fallen Tree. These Charles Volkmar prints demonstrate his command of the etching medium during the period. The collections also house a Plaque, confirming that Volkmar’s output included ceramics alongside his work as a printmaker.
The preservation of his work in national collections underscores the historical importance of his output. Today, historical records of his graphic arts, particularly his landscape scenes, are increasingly accessible for study. As many of these images reside in the public domain, they are often digitized, allowing for the reproduction of high-quality prints for educational and private use.
