Carlo Baldassare Simelli

Carlo Baldassare Simelli was an artist active during the mid-nineteenth century, with documented production spanning the period from 1830 to 1855. His recognized output primarily consists of printmaking, although museum records confirm he also worked in the medium of photography.

Simelli’s known subjects focused on detailed architectural studies and interior views of historic and monastic structures, demonstrating an interest in both major historical sites and the intimate, everyday settings of religious life. Representative prints include the large-scale study Fortificazioni dei bassi tempi sopra il Ponte Nomentano and the domestic scene Ingresso di una Casa alle quattro Fontane. A significant portion of his body of work captures the atmosphere within spiritual complexes, evidenced by titles such as Nel Convento dei Cappuccini, Nel Convento d’Aracoeli, and Nel Monastero dei Santi Quattro.

Today, Carlo Baldassare Simelli is represented in major United States collections, with the National Gallery of Art holding seven documented works, comprising six high-quality prints and one photograph. The preservation of these objects provides critical material for studying mid-nineteenth century print techniques and topographical documentation. As these works fall within the public domain, institutions often provide access to downloadable artwork, ensuring that high-quality prints derived from the originals are widely available for study.
