Calvert Richard Jones
Calvert Richard Jones was a photographer active in the nascent years of the medium, with documented creative output spanning the period of 1840 through 1846. His surviving oeuvre demonstrates an early interest in both carefully composed figural studies and architectural documentation.
Fifteen of Jones's photographs are currently preserved in major institutional collections, confirming the historical significance and museum-quality of his early work. These holdings are represented at distinguished institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Jones’s practice encompassed varied subject matter, including studies of locale such as Singleton Abbey, Swansea and Arch in Farmyard, Swansea. He was equally engaged with the portraiture of groups and individuals, composing detailed scenes like Artistical Groups in Various Poses, the domestic scene Family Group Portrait Posed in Doorway, and Lady in Open Window with Bird Cage.
