Bonaventura Peeters

Bonaventura Peeters (I) (1614-1652) secured his position as one of the preeminent marine artists working in the Low Countries during the first half of the 17th century. Active across painting, drawing, and etching, Peeters specialized in capturing the turbulent, vital relationship between man and the sea. His works rapidly defined the visual lexicon for maritime subjects, spanning from meticulous depictions of ships in busy ports, such as Capriccio View of a Mediterranean Port, to the high drama of naval conflicts and extreme weather events.

Peeters excelled in presenting the raw power of nature. Yet, Peeters was equally adept at depicting tranquility and industry. This duality, capturing both the commercial optimism and the inherent danger of seafaring life, provided his artistic output with enduring and complex appeal. Dying shortly after turning 38, Peeters nonetheless left an influential body of work that shaped subsequent marine painting in Flanders and the Netherlands.
