Augustine Haugland
Augustine Haugland was an artist active circa 1937. Haugland’s professional output is primarily associated with the Index of American Design (IAD), a federal initiative established to document historical American folk and decorative arts. The IAD studies emphasize precise documentation of objects, focusing on line, shadow, and material detail to create faithful records of American material culture.
Haugland is represented in museum collections by six documented designs for the IAD. These works include detailed studies of functional and ornamental items, such as a Bootjack, a Cigar Store Indian, a Rolling PIn, a Tin Lantern, and a Violin. These historical documents are held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art. Today, documentation from the Index of American Design, including Haugland’s work, is often considered public domain reference material. Such historically and archivally significant items are available as high-quality prints or downloadable artwork for researchers and enthusiasts globally.
