Antoni van Leest
Antoni van Leest was a graphic artist active during a concentrated period spanning 1571 to 1578. His documented artistic production consists entirely of prints focusing on Christian iconography and narrative scenes.
Eight prints representing the known scope of Antoni van Leest’s career are currently preserved in museum collections, most notably within the holdings of the Rijksmuseum. The surviving works demonstrate a preoccupation with major biblical themes. Key works include Aanbidding door de herders and Opstanding van Christus. Van Leest also executed a series dedicated to the gospel writers, exemplified by the compositions Johannes de evangelist schrijft zijn evangelie, Lucas de evangelist schrijft zijn evangelie, and Matteüs de evangelist schrijft zijn evangelie.
As historical graphic arts, many Antoni van Leest prints are today made available in the public domain, allowing scholars and collectors access to museum-quality images. The availability of high-quality prints ensures that the limited output documented from this active period remains fully accessible for historical and artistic study.
