Anton Crussens
Anton Crussens was an artist active during the mid-17th century, documented between 1630 and 1650. The surviving works attributed to Crussens consist primarily of drawings and landscape studies, demonstrating an interest in both detailed figural observation and characteristic topographical scenes.
Five drawings and landscapes are represented in major international museum collections, illustrating his primary subjects. His figural output centered on detailed character studies of elderly subjects, evidenced by titles such as Old Man Facing Left, Wearing Glasses and Threading a Needle and Seated Old Man Facing Right, Singing and Holding Music. These intimate portraits contrast with his broader compositional approach seen in his landscapes, including Jagers in een heuvelachtig landschap and Landscape with a horseman and a windmill in the distance.
The museum-quality of Crussens’s graphic output is confirmed by its inclusion in the permanent holdings of the Rijksmuseum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These important collections preserve the limited record of the artist's activity. Today, many of these detailed Anton Crussens prints are available as downloadable artwork for scholarly study and public appreciation.
