Annie B. Johnston

Annie B. Johnston was an artist and renderer active around 1937, primarily associated with the Index of American Design (IAD). The IAD, established under the Federal Art Project, focused on documenting examples of American decorative and folk arts, capturing the material culture and functional aesthetics of the nation.

Johnston contributed fifteen known renderings to the Index of American Design, illustrating various utilitarian objects, primarily focusing on ceramics and functional earthenware. These works serve as detailed historical records of design. Specific documented examples of Johnston’s work include studies of a Crock, Earthenware Drain Tile, Jar, and multiple renderings titled Pottery Flower Pot.

The documentation produced by Johnston is held in major permanent museum collections, reflecting its status as historically significant research material. Works by Annie B. Johnston are preserved in the collection of the National Gallery of Art. Because of their origins within the federal project, these historical documents often enter the public domain, making high-quality prints and downloadable artwork accessible for research and study.
