Portrait of Alexandre Lunois

Alexandre Lunois

Alexandre Lunois was an artist primarily active between 1873 and 1894. His documented output consists almost exclusively of prints, supported by at least one drawing, suggesting a focus on graphic arts and printmaking throughout his career.

Fifteen works by Lunois, specifically fourteen prints and one drawing, are currently represented in major international institutions, establishing his presence within prominent art historical archives. These holdings are divided among the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Lunois’s subject matter was diverse, spanning cultural studies, genre scenes, and travel documentation. Key works demonstrate this breadth, including the ethnographic observations captured in Spanish Dancer and Ballet Dancers, alongside studies such as Papegaai, naar beneden ziende and the regional genre scene Interior of a Peasant's House, Valley of Bethmale, France. His interest in foreign locales is further evidenced by the series Moroccan Sketches.

Today, many Alexandre Lunois prints are considered public domain works. Their preservation in major collections allows researchers and enthusiasts access to high-quality prints and downloadable artwork for educational purposes.
