Adriaen Haelwegh

Adriaen Haelwegh was an artist whose documented professional activity spanned the period between 1666 and 1691. His known body of work consists primarily of prints, with eleven examples currently represented in major American collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art.

The surviving works are centered on formal portraits of high-ranking European aristocratic and political figures. Notable subjects include several members of the Medici family, demonstrating Haelwegh’s role in documenting power structures of the era. These historical portraits feature figures such as Cosimo I, Garzia de' Medici, and Cardinal Francesco Maria dei Medici, alongside female royalty like Christina of Lorraine and Maria Magdalena of Austria.

The preservation of these historical documents in established institutions affirms their archival and artistic significance. The surviving Adriaen Haelwegh prints often serve as vital records of late 17th-century portraiture. Much of this work is now in the public domain, providing access to researchers who seek high-quality prints for scholarly use and historical reference.
