Adolf van der Laan

Adolf van der Laan was an artist active during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, documented primarily between 1694 and 1710. Known exclusively for his graphic work, the collection of Adolf van der Laan prints held in major institutions demonstrates a focus on diverse subject matter, including maritime art and historical portraiture.

At least fifteen of his prints are represented in prominent museum collections, establishing his legacy in the early modern period. Noteworthy documented works include the maritime scenes Feloek in een baai and Hollandse hoeker op het water, the religious and historical print Augsburgse geloofsbelijdenis, and the detailed portraits Portret van Hiëronymus van Praag and Portret van Jan Zizka.

The historical and artistic credibility of Van der Laan’s output is affirmed by the inclusion of his graphic works in major international collections, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because of their age and institutional placement, many of these historical images are now considered part of the public domain and are often reproduced as high-quality prints.
