A. Chauffy
A. Chauffy was a photographer active in the mid-nineteenth century, documented as working specifically around 1850. The artist is primarily known for ethnographic portraiture documenting North African subjects.
The surviving body of work consists of seven photographs represented in institutional collections. These early A. Chauffy prints focus exclusively on subjects within Morocco, providing period documentation of figures and inhabitants in cities such as Tangier and Tétouan. Examples of these works include portrait studies titled [Caïd, Morocco], [Man, Morocco], and [Woman, Tétouan, Morocco].
The historical significance of Chauffy’s output is established by its inclusion in major permanent collections. Seven photographs are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These museum-quality photographs offer important visual data on the region during the 1850s. Due to their age, many of these images reside in the public domain, making high-quality prints accessible for academic study and appreciation.
